A perfect mixology

Entering the room for the last evening event of the 12th Annual Winter Festival of Wine, you could sense something different was in the mix. The stage was set, literally, for a night to remember and what a night it was.

The venue was Powder Hounds Restaurant and the event was Mixology to Music. Firstly, the food would have made Gordon Ramsey smile, perfectly cooked halibut cresting mouth-watering Lobster Risotto, followed by tender pork medallions over sumptuous seasonal vegetable.

With the palate perfectly seasoned it was then time for the dessert-wine cocktails and the room was abuzz with bubbly, fruity and wonderfully coloured libations.

Add in two guitars, a saxophone and mix of old favourites pumped out by the Peter Ernst Band and the evening was a sight for all the senses—a great way to wrap up a wonderful week of wine.

Global flavours, local appeal

Powder Hounds Restaurant is tucked away in a quiet corner of Sun Peaks village, right near the banks of McGillivray Creek. But don’t let its peaceful location fool you—no candles or spa music at this eatery!

Powder Hounds Restaurant is warm and inviting, with a varied menu of comfort food that brings locals back again and again. Majority owners Tina and Peter Ernst have been Sun Peaks residents for nine years. Tina first came to Sun Peaks on a family trip and was struck by the atmosphere here.

“[Sun Peaks] had this little something that I still cannot describe,” said Tina.

That little something brought her and Peter back. Gerald Zlotnik was hired a few years later and together, the trio has been making Powder Hounds one of the most popular items on the Sun Peaks menu.

The menu at the restaurant is varied with a lot of international influence. The Ernsts’ German background is obvious when guests browse the menu—schnitzel is one of the restaurant’s specialties and is often offered as an earlybird special during the busy winter and summer months. According to Zlotnik, the most popular item on the menu is the baseball-cut sirloin steak, served with roast potatoes and red wine jus. One item on the menu that’s often overlooked but is highly recommended is the restaurant’s escargot.

So what do you tell your out-of-town guests about Powder Hounds Restaurant? “Great food at reasonable prices in a casual atmosphere,” is how Zlotnik sums it up.

Sounds delicious.
